Still a tight duel: Internet Explorer 7 leads in 16 European Countries versus 14 for Firefox 2 |
Over the week from March 5 to 11, 2007, the share of Firefox 2 visits (of all visits, all browsers combined) was higher than that of Internet Explorer 7 in 14 of the 30 European countries studied, i.e. approximately half, as set out below.
Firefox 2 was used the most in Finland, proportionally to visits with another browser in the same country: 27% of the visits generated in the country, all browsers combined. While during the same week, Slovenia ranked No. 1 in the use of Firefox, all versions combined, with 44.5% (see our "Close to 25% of Use Rate in Europe for Firefox " study). Slovenia (26.8%), Germany (25.9%), Croatia (23.4%) and Poland (22.1%) followed Finland.
With regard to Internet Explorer 7, France had the highest use rate in Europe at 33.2%. The UK ranked second with 32.3%, then Switzerland (31.5%), Ireland (29.7%) and the Netherlands (29.5%).
Let’s turn to the evolution in France and Spain, which we followed in our prior studies.
|
Internet Explorer 7 is used 2.5 times more often than Firefox 2 for visits in France, but leads less within its own family. |
Firefox 2 leaped forward on the week of its official launch between October 23 and 29, 2006: 3.7% of Internet visits generated in France against only 1.7% for IE7 (who had not experienced this type of phenomenon when it was launched on 19 October 2006). Firefox 2 continued to progress until the week of 13 to 19 November 2006 and achieved 7.2% of visits, while Internet Explorer 7 attracted 3.3%, i.e. two times less visits.
In Week 47 (from 20 to 26 November 2006), the share of visits conducted via Internet Explorer 7 equaled that of Firefox 2, resulting in an advance between 27 November and 3 December 2006: 11.4% for IE7 versus 8.2% for FF2.
Since that time, the gap has widened. Internet Explorer 7 leaped forward throughout the month of December 2006 and continued to increase more moderately at the beginning of 2007 to achieve a score of 33.2% in France in the week of March 5 to 11, 2007. Firefox 2’s growth continues, in particular over recent weeks (with a rate of 13.6% for March 5 to 11), while Internet Explorer 7’s use share has been leaning towards stagnation since the week of 19 February 2007:
|
In the chart below, it is clear that Firefox 2 imposed its presence more rapidly than other versions of the challenging browser than Internet Explorer 7, faced with prior IE versions. While FF2 generated 61% of the Firefox visits for the week of March 5 to 11, IE7 only generated 45% of the Internet Explorer visits during the same week:

The renewal of former Internet Explorer versions by IE7 stands pat in Spain |
Like France, Firefox 2 truly made an impact the week it was launched (W43), with a share of visits generated from Spain of 1.9%, and outclassed Internet Explorer 7 (1.5%), who achieved greater presence up until that time.
Until Week 48 (end of November 2006), Firefox 2 still originated a greater number of visits (5.1%) than Internet Explorer (4.4%).
However, starting in Week 49 (4 December 2006), Internet Explorer 7 exceeded Firefox 2, with very marked growth in the month of December 2006. Like France, the increase in the use of IE7 slowed somewhat at the beginning of 2007 and has been stagnating since mid-February at a rate of 22.7% for March 5 to 11, 2007. Firefox 2's growth has continued over the weeks and reached 9.5% in Week 10:
|
In the chart below, and as we have just seen for France, Firefox 2 more rapidly imposed its presence in relation to the other versions in its family than Internet Explorer 7 in relation to the other versions of IE. FF2 generated 61% of the Spanish Firefox visits in the Week of March 5 to 11, 2007 (identical rate to that measured in France), while IE7 only generated 28% of the Spanish Internet Explorer visits in the same week … Are Spanish Internet users ignoring IE7? Even if one assumes that Firefox users are not similar to IE users and that they are more responsive to certain innovations, the difference is significant …

After a very publicized launch of Firefox 2, the leading browser’s Version 7 has responded and achieved a higher use rate then FF2 in 16 of the 30 European countries studied... However, in France, and especially in Spain, IE7 has not imposed its presence within its own family, or at least not like FF2 within the Firefox family, who is, by the way, already working on FF3 (available in Alpha version).
