French Regions:
The Award for Internet Visits per Inhabitant goes to Alsace
|
|
| This study compares the number of Internet visits in the various French regions, both generally and per number of inhabitants ... Who uses the Internet the most? |
| Perimeter: |
- Study conducted between April 23 and 29, 2007
- Perimeter of 88,187 web sites audited by XiTi
|
|
| Ile-de-France, Rhône-Alpes and PACA-Corsica are the three regions in France that generate the most Internet visits |
In the week of April 23 to 29, 2007, if the total number of visits generated in Limousin (the region with the lowest level of visits) are indexed to one visit:
- 1,801 visits occurred in Ile-de-France in the same period,
- 988 in Rhône-Alpes,
- 788 in Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur – Corsica,
- 494 in the Loire Valley,
- and 478 in Nord-Pas-de-Calais
This Internet consumption is obviously related to the density of the population in these regions, with these five regions accounting for close to half of the population of France (47.5%).
On the same basis, the least populated regions, the Overseas regions, totaled the lowest Internet consumption after Limousin:
- La Réunion (7 visits for 1 in Limousin),
- Guyana (14 visits for 1 in Limousin),
- Guadeloupe and Martinique (35 visits for 1 in Limousin)
|
This initial data provides a scorecard of the French regions that generate the most Internet visits, a ranking significantly tied to the number of inhabitants living in these regions. Let’s now turn to regional performance and study Internet use per inhabitant …
|
| Internet visits per inhabitant are the highest in Alsace, Burgundy and Poitou-Charentes |
In the week of April 23 to 29, 2007, we analyzed the number of visits effected by inhabitant and by region. Based on this indicator, Limousin once again has the lowest level. We therefore used the index of 1 visit for all Limousin visits/inhabitant to study the visits/inhabitant levels of other regions of France.
Therefore, for 1 visit/inhabitant generated in Limousin:
- 154 visits/inhabitant occurred in Alsace,
- 128 in Burgundy,
- and 122 in Poitou-Charentes
These three regions are not the most populated (respectively the 13th, 16th and 15th in number of inhabitants), but the most dynamic in terms of Internet use per inhabitant.
Ile-de-France, Rhône-Alpes and Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur - Corsica, the leading trio in terms of total visits generated by regions, are the most populated, but also have a rather high level of Internet use per inhabitant and therefore are ranked 4 to 6. In the week of April 23 to 29, 2007, for 1 visit/inhabitant generated in Limousin:
- 119 visits/inhabitant occurred in Rhône-Alpes,
- 114 in Ile de France,
- And 113 in Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur – Corsica
However, the Loire Valley and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, 4th and 5th in total visits generated by the regions, owe this mainly to their large population, as their numbers of Internet visits/inhabitant are not among the highest. For 1 visit/inhabitant generated in Limousin, 105 visits/inhabitant occurred in the Loire Valley (10th regional position) and 86 visits/inhabitant occurred in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais (15th regional position).
The seven regions that visit the Internet the least per inhabitant are also the least populated regions (with the exception of the Central region, ranking 10th in population). For 1 visit/inhabitant generated in Limousin, the French region where Internet use per inhabitant is the lowest, the following results are observed:
- 6 visits/inhabitants in La Réunion,
- 18 in the Central Region,
- 27 in Franche-Comté,
- 50 in Guyana,
- 56 in Guadeloupe,
- and 63 in Martinique

Do regional disparities in Internet use exist between the week and weekend?
|
| Weekly visits: in Limousin and Franche-Comté, visits typically occur during the week |
In the week of April 23 to 29, 1007, if we index the total number of visits generated on a weekend day in Limousin or Franche-Comté to 100 visits:
- The visits that occur during a week day in Limousin are eight times greater than those generated on a weekend day!
The visits that occur during a week day in Franche-Comté are almost 2.5 times greater than those generated on a weekend day These numbers indicate that the Internet is clearly used more for professional reasons than for private reasons in these regions.
These two regions are those in which the variation of Internet use between a weekend day and a week day is the greatest.
|
|
The variation for the other French regions is set out below. Ile-de-France occupies the 3rd position with 150 visits per week day versus 100 visits on a weekend day: a significant difference (that may be tied to its extensive economic activity and therefore greater professional use during the week), but much lesser than in Franche-Comté and especially Limousin. Then, the Haute-Normandie, Poitou-Charentes and Martinique follow, occupying ranks 4 to 6, with 121 visits for Haute-Normandie, 119 for Poitou-Charentes and Martinique on average on a week day for 100 visits realized in each of these regions on a weekend day.
Almost all the regions in France show a higher Internet use on a week day than on a weekend day, with a few exceptions ... It is almost equal in Guadeloupe, Guyana and Lorraine, while La Réunion's Internet use is slightly lesser on a week day than a weekend day: for 100 visits in Réunion on a weekend day, only 93 occur on a week day. Is this specificity of the Overseas regions (ex-Martinique) due to the amount of personal communication (expatriates …) with continental inhabitants on weekends? A simply hypothesis …
Ile-de-France, Rhône-Alpes and Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur-Corsica are the three French regions that generate the most Internet visits because the level of Internet/inhabitant consumption is high and also because these are the most populated regions of France.
Limousin visits, for the most part occurring on a week day, are the lowest in France, whether in terms of Internet use per inhabitant or total use for the region.
Finally, the award for inhabitants who use the Internet the most goes to Alsace, Burgundy and Poitou-Charentes, who have the highest visits/inhabitant indicators.

Methodology: As we do not differentiate IP addresses associated with visits generated in Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur from those associated with visits generated in Corsica, we have not dissociated these two regions in this study. The visits indicator presented is proportional to the visits detected within the scope of sites audited by Xiti in the week of 23/04/2007 to 29/04/2007. The population estimate of French regions realized by the INSEE allows for the number of visits recorded to be related to the number of inhabitants for each of the regions. The visits/inhabitant indicator is therefore not sensitive to the demographic size of the region. For each of the two indicators studied, the visits indicator and the visits/inhabitant indicator, Limousin is the region that totaled the least amount of visits. Its visits indicator therefore was used as a unit basis for the other visits indicators. The 1 base in this analysis allows for a detailed distinction between regions, with a manipulation of a reasonable amount of numbers (1,801 more visits in Ile-de-France than in Limousin). As we know the traffic recorded between Monday, 23/04/2007, and Friday, 27/04/2007, we were able to calculate the number of visits by ‘week day’. Similarly, we calculated the number of visits/’weekend day’. The latter was brought back to 100 visits. For a given region, for 100 visits recorded on a weekend day, this indicator provides the number of visits recorded for a week day.
