Operating systems:
Mac OS more dynamic than Windows since September 2007

In spite of the progression of Vista’s visit share, Window’s overall share loses a half-point faced with its main competitors, Mac OS and Linux, during recent months.
Perimeter:
  • Study conducted from to 1st January to 31 December 2007
  • Perimeter of 152,867 websites
One year after its launch, 12 visits out of 100 are made with the Vista operating system

After a launch with great pomp at the end of January 2007 for the general public and a bit of controversy, Windows Vista slowly continues its growth…

Thus, the last born of Windows systems gains more than a point of monthly visit share since August in order to reach 11.57% in December 2007:

  • +1.08 points in August,
  • + 1.24 points in September,
  • + 1.09 points in October,
  • + 1.19 points in November,
  • + 1.57 points in December.

Lets now analyze the repercussions of the development of Vista on the visit share of the other Windows versions.

The visit shares of the different Windows versions within the visits of this operating system’s family are represented below.

Out of 100 Windows visits, Vista thus achieves 12.2 visits in December 2007 vs. 0.2 in January 2007.

Faced with this growth, Windows XP’s visit share over the totality of Windows’ visits diminished by 8 points in one year:
  • Windows XP thus generates 83.7% of the Windows visits in December 2007 vs. 91.8% in January, but still remains very far from the most used version of Windows.

Out of the totality of the visits of the Windows family, the share of the versions other than XP all show a drop, with the exception of Windows 2003 of which the share (very confidential) even has a tendency to increase:

  • Windows 2000 attains 2.02% of the Windows visits in December 2007 vs. 4.10% in January 2007,

  • Windows 98: 0.71% of the Windows visits in December 2007 vs. 1.89% in January 2007,

  • Windows Millennium: 0.29% of the Windows visits in December 2007 vs. 0.64% in January 2007,

  • Windows 2003: 0.43% of the Windows visits in December 2007 vs. 0.37% in January 2007.

If the visit share of Vista progresses over the months (more or less mechanically via computer purchases), this last version does not contribute to reinforce the position of Windows: for proof, the evolution data below…

The challengers Mac OS and Linux more combative than Windows

The end of 2007 sees the hierarchy of the operating systems’ market still respected… A market crushed by Windows with 95% of visits over the month of December, followed by Mac OS (3.7%) and Linux (0.9%).

But during the second half of 2007, the operating system leader is not the most dynamic…

Between July and December 2007, the visit share of Windows diminished, whereas Linux and above all Mac OS are increasing:

  • 3.72% of visits for Mac OS in December 2007, i.e. +0.49 points vs. August 2007. Its share is rising each month since August (particularly in September) via its X Intel version. Of note, the arrival on the market of Mac OS X iPhone: still very discreet, to be continued in the coming months…,
  • 0.88% for Linux in December 2007 vs. 0.77% in July 2007 (+0.11 points), with stabilization since November,
  • 94.96% for Windows in December 2007 vs. 95.49% in July 2007 (-0.53 points). After a drop from August to October, its visit share is stable over the last two months of the year.

No waves for the consoles still in 4th position with 0.09% of the visits in December 2007: 0.04% for the PS3, 0.03% for the PSP and finally 0.02% for the Wii.

Windows Vista, with less than 12% of use at the end of 2007, seems to have a hard time convincing… Will the release of the Service Pack 1 planned for the 1st quarter 2008 allow it to affirm itself while in the same period the SP3 of XP will be put on the market?

Meanwhile, Mac OS and Linux progress slowly but surely…

Rendezvous in the coming months on XiTi Monitor in order to follow the operating systems’ evolution.
