Search engine barometer – September 2007
Google crosses the symbolic border of 90% in visit share

This barometer is published every month in order to follow the principal evolutions of the search engines’ visit shares. You will find below the one for the month of September 2007.
Perimeter:
  • Study conducted from to September 1 to 30, 2007
  • Perimeter of 86,262 websites
TOP 5: Only Yahoo! stands up to the Google machine this month

In September 2007, Google crossed the symbolic threshold of 90% of visits (90.23%), and thus still “gleans” ground faced with the search engines Yahoo (3.20%), MSN (2.31%), Orange (1.72%) and Free (0.67%):

Google wins 3 points of visit share in one year:

  • 90.23% of visits in September 2007 vs. 87.13% in September 2006,

  • and increases by 0.25 points between August and September 2007.

As in August, its 4 principal competitors are all in decline in September with the exception of Yahoo!:

  • Yahoo! shows the greatest drop over one year with -1.11 points (September 2007 vs. September 2006), but for September 2007, and for the second consecutive month, its visit share is slightly progressing: 3.20% vs. 3.17% in August 2007,

  • -0.78 points for Orange over one year, and a visit share that passes from 1.82% in August to 1.72% in September,

  • -0.26 points for Free over one year, of which the visit share almost succeeds at maintaining itself between August (0.69%) and September 2007 (0.67%),

  • +0.17 points for MSN between the month of September 2006 and 2007; the only search engine among the 4 to have progressed over a year. It nonetheless loses 0.03 points in September 2007.

TOP 15: 9Online confirms its progression for the month of August, Virgilio pulls itself together

We find again in the 6th to 10th places of the honours list of search engines in September 2007: AOL, Alice, Voilà, AltaVista and 9Online (who this month outstrips Ask). This honours list is completed by Ask, Virgilio, Exalead, Lycos and the Toile du Québec who occupy the 11th to 15th places.

Faced with the dynamic Google in September 2007, only three search engines within this top 15 have a visit share on the rise:

  • 9Online, already well situated in August, achieves the greatest increase (proportionally to its visit share of 0.1%): +25.5%,

  • followed by Virgilio: +21.8%,

  • finally, Yahoo! confirms the trend of the previous month with a rise of 1% in its visit share.

All the other engines from the top 15 show a more or less strong decline in September, particularly Voilà (-22%).

Google did it… 90% of the visit share has now been crossed, and the other engines struggle more and more to keep their places… When will there be a reaction?

Rendezvous next month on XiTi Monitor for the latest evolutions of the search engines.

Methodology:

This search engine barometer is conducted on the francophone websites.
