No summer break for Firefox 3

“Download Day” saw the spectacular launch of Firefox 3, which was adopted massively within just a few days. As a result, Firefox 3 already counted for more than one Mozilla visit out of 4 on June 19, 2008, just 2 days after its release. How do things stand ten days after this event? Answer in the study below.
Perimeter:
  • Study conducted from June 16 to 30, 2008
  • Perimeter of 110,986 websites
Firefox 3 forges ahead in Europe…

For the first time, the Guinness Book of Records has just validated a record number of downloads… Proof then of the success of “Download Day” presented by the Mozilla Foundation, which has set the 1st record of this type with 8,002,530 downloads of its latest browser, Firefox 3 within 24 hours of its release. An excellent marketing achievement as Firefox 3 thus makes an explosive entry on the market.

The graph below shows the daily evolution of the average visit share of Firefox 3 in Europe in relation to all browsers’ visits from June 16 to 30, 2008.

After the success of “Download Day” on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 (see our study « Two in one for Mozilla Firefox »), the visit share of Firefox 3 in Europe continued to progress by more than one point per day in the following week (compared to the same days during launch week):

  • 9.6% on Wednesday, June 25 compared to 6.5% on Wednesday, June 18: +3.1 points,
  • 9.7% on Thursday, June 26 compared to 7.8% on Thursday, June 19: +1.9 points,
  • 9.9% on Friday, June 27 compared to 8.3% on Friday, June 20: +1.6 points,
  • 10.8% on Saturday, June 28 compared to 9.1% on Saturday, June 21: +1.7 points,
  • 10.9% on Sunday, June 29 compared to 9.3% on Sunday, June 22: +1.6 points,
  • 9.9% on Monday, June 30 compared to 8.7% on Monday, June 23: +1.2 points.

It’s quite normal that the share of FF3 was lower on Monday 30 than on Sunday 29 and this does not indicate any stagnation. In fact, the use of Firefox is always proportionally higher at the weekend.

And, as we have already observed, these figures do not represent a simple renewal of Firefox 2 with Firefox 3 as, in parallel, the visit share of the entire Mozilla family is still up in European countries:

  • 32.1% on Wednesday, June 25 compared to 31% on Wednesday, June 18: +1.1 points,

  • 31.8% on Thursday, June 26 compared to 31.2% on Thursday, June 19: + 0.6 points,

  • 32% on Friday, June 27 compared to 31.3% Friday, June 20: + 0.7 points,

  • 35% on Saturday, June 28 compared to 34.1% on Saturday, June 21: + 0.9 points,

  • 35.1% on Sunday, June 29 compared to 34.3% on Sunday, June 22: + 0.8 points,

  • 31.8% on Monday, June 30 compared to 31.2% on Monday, June 23: + 0.6 points.

Enthusiasm for the free browser in Europe is well and truly present, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

and generates around 30% of Mozilla Firefox visits in the week after its official launch

The graph below, showing the average visit share of Firefox 3 as part of the Mozilla family, can be used to analyze the position of this new free browser in relation to global visits.

In the week from June 23 to 29, 2008, Firefox 3 generated an average of 29.9% of Mozilla visits in European countries.

This average does not reveal differences between countries, of course. We have particularly focused on two of these countries. In France and Spain, the weight of Firefox 3 in relation to all Mozilla visits is lower than the average observed in Europe:

  • Firefox 3 represents 23.4% of Mozilla visits in France,
  • And 27.9% in Spain.

Mozilla’s Spanish visits are, however, proportionally higher than French visits via Firefox 3: are Spanish Internet users more excited about novelties than French Internet users?

The sensational arrival of Firefox 3 on June 17 seems to be bearing fruit, as Mozilla was still gaining ground in the week following "Download Day".

More on XiTi Monitor in September 2008 to follow the European development of the red panda compared to its competitors.

Methodology:

In the first part of the survey, the share of visits by Firefox 3 corresponds to visits made using this browser compared with all visits by all browsers.

In the second part of the survey, the share of visits by Firefox 3 corresponds to visits made using this browser compared with all visits by browsers of the Mozilla family.

In this survey, the European indicator seeks to be representative of the audited countries in its make up. In both parts, the average visit shares for a European country correspond to the average of the indicators for the 32 countries studied. As a result, behavior in a European country that generates few visits has an equitable impact on behavior across the continent.

For this survey, the 32 countries are:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
