Euro 2008: France loses the match, but Internet users are still very interested in the football

The fascination for Euro 2008 matches is strong on the web, but to what degree? Answer below.
  • Study conducted from 31st March to 22nd June 2008
  • Perimeter of 10 football news websites
Increasing attractiveness of football news sites one month before Euro 2008

The chart below shows the daily trends for visits recorded to 10 French football news websites from March 31 to June 22, 2008.

The trend, when expressed in terms of an index 100 for visits on March 31, 2008, is more or less stable from early April to May 6 2008. But from May 7, 2008, there is a gradual and pronounced increase in traffic on French football news websites: so, visits doubled between May 6 and 27. This increase thus began one month before the opening of the Euro… but it is true that the month of May 2008 is already full of football news: the end of the English Premier League on May 11, final of the UEFA Cup on 14, end of the championships in France and Germany on 17, end of the championships in Spain and Italy on 18, final of the Champion’s League on 21 and the final of the French Cup on 24! And no respite since then with Euro 2008. We might confidently assume that Internet users were also interested in the Euro a few weeks before it started: pretournament friendlies, fitness of the players, composition of the teams… Thus, "footballer" web users have, for the most part, got into the habit of coming on to these sites for information before the start of the competition and there is no particular peak observed on June 7, the 1st day of matches. Hence the importance for websites and advertisers to be well positioned upstream of a major sporting event like this.

After May 27, the trend continues until June 14 and begins to increase again from June 15, an increase which is maintained until June 22. The trend is therefore 220 visits on June 22 as against 100 on March 31, 2008. This shows that the final to be held on June 29, 2008 attracts the interest of all supporters, despite France having been eliminated…

**French football news sites:

We selected sites specialising in football news, audited by XiTi, devoting part of their contents to the European Football Championship. We then selected the top 10 sites by number of visits.

***Weekly trend:

The moving average of periodicity 7 enables data to be smoothed. It corresponds to an estimate of the weekly trend for the series. For the last 3 days of the period, a linear regression over the previous 7 days makes an estimate of the moving average possible.
