1st round of the Presidential Elections 2007:
Internet users didn’t wait until 8:00pm…

The results of the 1st round were officially announced April 22, 2007 at 8pm on the television networks, but Internet users, it seems, searched to obtain information earlier on the Web…
Perimeter:
  • Survey carried out April 15th and 22nd 2007
  • Perimeter of 67 current events-media websites
Peak of the visits Sunday, April 22, 2007 between 6pm and 8pm on current events-media websites before the televised results

The graph below presents the hourly visit index for the days of the Sundays April 15 and 22, 2007 on the current events-media websites (with a base of 100 fixed on the time slot of 12am – 12:59am April 15, 2007).

It is interesting to note that at no matter what time of the day, the visits on Sunday, April 22 are always superior to those of the preceding Sunday, and most particularly at certain hours…

From 2pm Sunday, April 22, 2007, the visits grow whereas on the preceding Sunday the visits stagnate in the afternoon. The progression of the visits are strongly emphasised starting at 5pm, and reach a veritable peak from 6pm to 8pm:

  • 5pm – 5:59pm: 2.6 times more visits 04/22/07 vs. 04/15/07
  • 6pm – 6:59pm: 3.8 times more visits
  • 7pm – 7:59pm: 3.2 times more visits
  • 8pm – 8:59pm: 2.3 times more visits

The Internet users visibly searched for information concerning the first estimates of the 1st round election results before the official announcement at 8pm on the television networks. This would explain the peak of visits between 6pm and 8pm, then a fall starting from the moment where the results were televised. A relative drop because the Internet visits on April 22, 2007 remain, until midnight, more than double those of April 15, 2007.

Will the Internet users also be so eager to get a sneak preview of the name of the President of the French Republic on Sunday, May 6, 2007? Rendezvous on XiTi Monitor to know the answer…

Methodology:

In this survey, we directly compared the audience on record in a perimeter of current events/media websites from Sunday, 04/22/2007, day of the 1st round results of the French presidential elections, to the preceding Sunday the 04/15/2007. We made, naturally, the hypothesis that the difference of audience on record between April 15 and April 22, 2007 represents the impact produced by the search for results of the 1st round of French presidential elections 2007.
