Search engine barometer – May 2007
Takeoff of Exalead

This barometer is published every month in order to follow the principal evolutions of the visit shares of the search engines. You will find below the one for the month of May 2007.
Perimeter:
  • Survey carried out from May 1st to May 31, 2007
  • Perimeter of 91,214 websites
TOP 5: Google continues to establish its domination, whereas Yahoo! is in full disarray

If one looks at the graph below presenting the 5 first search engines in visit shares for May 2007, the honors list remains unchanged compared to the preceding months… the Google hegemony is incontestable (89.3%) confronted with Yahoo! (3.2%), MSN (2.2%), Orange (1.8%) and Free (0.8%) who share a small piece of the cake…

The analysis of visit share in evolution, from May 2006 to May 2007, shows well that Google, not happy to already be THE search engine, continues to take the lead: 85.7% in May 2006 for 89.3% in May 2007, i.e. +3.6 points in 1 year.

The 4 principal search engines after Google are all losing speed on a vision of one year, particularly Yahoo! (-1.2 points in one year) whose visit share has fallen drastically since the beginning of the year:

TOP 15: The strongest progressions in percentage are for Exalead and 9online

In May 2007, it is respectively the search engines AOL, Club Internet, Alice, Voilà and AltaVista that appear in the 6th to 10th places with the visit shares oscillating between 0.7% and 0.13%. Exalead, 9online, Virgilio, Ask and Lycos come to close this top 15.

If Google acknowledges the strongest progression in points between April and May 2007 (+0.32), they are not the ones who climb on the 1st place podium in terms of difference in % (that makes it possible to analyze the evolution proportionally of the visit shares) but the French search engine Exalead with +16.1%:

Good month of May as well for 9online (+9.9%), Orange (+4.4%), Ask (+4.2%), Alice (+3.7%) and Virgilio (+1.4%).
More negative trend for AltaVista: fall of more than 11% in its visit share in May compared to April 2007, as well as for Lycos (-9.6%) and Yahoo! as we indicated above: -7.1% and -0.24 points. Substandard performance also this month for MSN, Free and Voilà.

Will Google continue to increase its lead in order to reach 90% of the visit shares? Rendezvous next month on XiTi Monitor for the latest evolutions of the search engines.

Methodology:

This search engine barometer is carried out on the francophone websites.

For the evolution over 13 months, we do not have data for Orange for the months of May and June 2006, which explains why the curve concerning this search engine begins in July 2006.
