Search engine barometer – October 2007
Ask and MSN get out of a tight spot

This barometer is published every month in order to follow the principal evolutions of the search engines’ visit shares. You will find below that for the month of October 2007.
  • Study conducted from the 1st to 31st October 2007
  • Perimeter of 87,113 websites
TOP 5: only MSN resists faced with Google who confirms its 90% share of Internet visits

In October 2007, Google repeats its September performance by remaining stable above 90% of the visit share (90.23%), still leaving no respite to Yahoo! (3.18%), MSN (2.63%), Orange (1.63%) and Free (0.56%):

Google still shows an increase of nearly 3 points of its visit share in one year:

  • 90.23% of the visits in October 2007 vs. 87.33% in October 2006,

  • and for the 1st time in many months, its visit share stabilises in October…

Among the 4 principal competitors, only MSN gains ground in October:

  • +0.33 points in visit share between September and October 2007, it is also the only one to progress over one year: 2.63% of the visits in October 2007 vs. 2.43% in October 2006

While Yahoo!, Orange and Free are all losing speed:

  • Yahoo!, who nevertheless pulled itself together over August and September, is again in decline in October and still shows a sharp drop over a year with -0.89 points in visit share (October 2007 vs. October 2006),

  • -0.73 points for Orange over one year, and -0.09 points between September and October 2007,

  • -0.34 points for Free over one year, with a real fall in its visit share between September and October 2007: 0.56% vs. 0.67%.

Top 15: bad month of October for Voilà and Free

AOL, Alice, Ask, AltaVista and 9Online achieve respectively the 6th to 10th places of the honours list of search engines in October 2007. This honours list is completed by Virgilio, Voilà (who loses 4 places compared with September), Exalead, la Toile du Québec and Lycos, all under the threshold of 0.1% visit share.

Among this top 15 of October 2007, three search engines show a good progression compared with the last month:

  • Ask, after a break in September, allows itself the greatest increase (proportionally to its visit share of 0.11%): +16.3%. Which coincides with the launch of its new version Ask3D debuting in October: will the search engine reach its objective, which is to enter into the top 3 of the search engines in France?,

  • MSN: +14.3%,

  • And Virgilio who continues to forge ahead as in September: +8.1%.

Whereas for the second consecutive month, Voilà shows the sharpest decline of this top 15 (-29.8%), followed by Free (-17.5%).

Google stabilises at 90.23% visit share in October 2007. Has the limit been reached or will the insatiable search engine continue to swallow up this market?
