Search engine barometer – September 2008
Google passes the 91% mark

This indicator is published every month to follow the main trends in search engine visit shares. Below is the barometer for September 2008.
Perimeter:
  • Study conducted from September 1 to 30, 2008
  • Perimeter of 94,460 websites audited by XiTi
Top 5: over one year, AOL has been the only challenger to gain ground in the face of the giant Google

As the leader, Google recorded more than 91% of visits in September 2008 (91.21%), leaving Yahoo! (2.69%), Live Search (2.16%), AOL (1.43%) and Orange (1.24%) far behind:

Over one year, Google’s share of visits has increased by 1 point:

  • 91.21% of visits in September 2008 compared to 90.23% in September 2007,

  • September 2008 is the 6th month in a row in which Google has recorded the highest growth in points: +0.44 points this month, pushing it over the 91% mark.

Out of its 4 main competitors, only AOL has managed to gain ground over this same period:

  • +0.85 points between September 2007 and September 2008 for AOL’s share of visits (which uses Google technology), thanks to very good progress in January 2008. The trend has veered downwards since May 2008, however, with a loss of 0.08 points in September 2008.

The balance sheet is more pessimistic for Yahoo!, Orange and Live Search:

  • Lagging behind since April 2008, Yahoo! still records the greatest decline over one year with -0.51 points in share of visits (and -0.15 points this month),

  • Orange, whose share of visits has been eroding for over one year, records a loss of 0.48 points between September 2007 and September 2008,

  • -0.14 points for Live Search over one year, which has been on the decline since April 2008.

Apart from Google, all of the search engines in the Top 10 have recorded a decline in their share of visits between August and September 2008:

  • In terms of points, Yahoo! (-0.15 points) and Orange (-0.10 points) are suffering the most,

  • Whereas in terms of percentage (and therefore in proportion to their share of visits), Alice (-14%) and Seznam (-16%) record the biggest drop.
