Browser War: FF2 pulls ahead of IE7 in Europe |
|
If Internet Explorer clearly dominates the browser market, its latest version IE7 seems to have a hard time imposing itself in Europe faced with a Firefox 2 that is more conquering than ever… |
Perimeter: |
- Study conducted from Monday, July 2 to Sunday, July 8, 2007
- Perimeter of 95,827 websites
|
|
The duel of the latest version turns slightly to the advantage of Firefox 2 in Europe |
During the week of July 2 to 8, 2007, the average visit share in a European country is in fact 23.1% for Firefox 2 and 22.6% for Internet Explorer 7 (of the totality of visits, all browsers taken together).
Whereas from March 5 to 11, 2007, it was Internet Explorer 7 who lead the dance with 19% vs. 15.6% for Firefox 2:

If one looks at their visit share in each of the 32 countries studied, it is a perfect tie in terms of the number of countries “preferring” one or the other of the two browsers: the visit share of Firefox 2 is in fact superior to that of Internet Explorer 7 in 16 of the 32 European countries studied below, that is just half. But in terms of level of visit share country by country, the advantage belongs to Firefox 2 overall…
It is in Slovenia that Firefox 2 is the most used, proportionally to the visits made with another browser from this same country: 39.6% of the visits generated from the country, no matter what browser. It is also in this country that Firefox, all versions taken together, is the most used in Europe with 44.5% of the visits (see our study “Firefox narrowly misses 28% use in Europe, Internet Explorer under 70%”). After Slovenia follows: Finland (38.5%), Hungary (33.8%), Slovakia (33.6%) and Poland (33.4%).
For Internet Explorer 7, it is in the United Kingdom that the use rate is the highest in Europe with 34.9% (rate lower, in comparison, to that of Slovenia where Firefox 2 is the most used with 39.7%). Malta is second with 34.3%, and then comes France and the Netherlands (34%) and Denmark (33.6%).

Firefox 2’s success within its family whereas Internet Explorer 7 has a hard time imposing itself |
The graph below, presenting the visit shares of Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 relative to their respective families, makes it possible to analyze the place that the new versions of the two flagship browsers have taken within their overall visits.
The report is clear: Firefox 2 has more widely imposed itself faced with the other versions of Firefox than Internet Explorer 7 faced with earlier versions of IE. On average for a European country, FF2 generates 83.2% of Firefox’s visits for the week of July 2 to 8, 2007 whereas IE7 only generates 33.9% of the Internet Explorer visits during the same week:
The visit shares of Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 in their respective families vary, of course, from one country to another. Here is the data for France and Spain.
|
In France, like for the average European country, FF2 more quickly imposed itself within its family (85.1% of the visits from July 2 to 8, 2007) than IE7 (46.5% of the total IE visits).
The latest versions of the two browsers are otherwise proportionally more prevalent in the visits of the two browsers in France than in the average of the European countries:
- FF2: 85.1% of Firefox’s visits in France vs. 83.2% on average for a European country
- IE7: 46.5% of Internet Explorer’s visits in France vs. 33.9% on average for a European country, which is even more marked than for Firefox.
|
|
In Spain, the advantage is also for FF2 who attains 85% of the Firefox visits whereas IE7 generates 31.6% of the Internet Explorer visits.
If the latest version of Firefox is proportionally more widespread in Firefox’s visits in Spain than in the average of the European countries, it is not the case for the latest version of Internet Explorer:
- IE7: 31.6% of Internet Explorer’s visits in Spain vs. 33.9% on average for a European country.
Firefox 2’s average visit share for a European country has just passed that of Internet Explorer 7. If Internet Explorer is still clearly the leading browser, it seems that it’s latest version, contrary to that of Firefox, doesn’t have unanimous support… IE7 having been released in October 2006, one can suppose that the IE6 users wanting to update have had the time to do it: will the others be a bit more reluctant?

Methodology:
In the first part of the study, the visit shares of Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 by country correspond to the visits made by these two browsers in comparison to the entirety of visits, all browsers taken together, by country.
In the second part of the study, the visit shares of Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7 for France and Spain correspond to the visits made by these two browsers in comparison to the entirety of their respective families’ visits in each of the two countries.
The indicator of Europe is meant to be, in this study, representative of the countries audited that form it. In each of the two parts, the average visit shares for a European country correspond to the average of the indicators of the 32 countries studied. Thus, the behavior of a European country that generates few visits intervenes fairly in the behavior of its continent.
